Wonka, Trunchbull and the BFG

“Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”-Roald Dahl

It’s a whiz-poppingly dahlicious day- the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s birthday (13th September,1916).

Matilda, the Big Friendly Giant, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory,The Witches, and The Twits opened up a world of wonder, magic and beautiful escape when I was a refugee in The Gambia. Roald Dahl’s books granted me the ability to laugh again – find humour even when  childhood could be dark, and each story was a lesson in the power of magic and belief in possibilities. There was a week when I pleaded with the librarian at the Children’s Section to take up to four of his books home, instead of the standard  two books and I felt as though I had won the jackpot when she agreed!

However my three favorite books  are : Danny The Champion of The World, the BFG and Matilda and to celebrate  the day, here are some awesome quotes from these stories:

a. “Matilda said, “Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog. Make sure everything you do is so completely crazy it’s unbelievable…” ― Roald Dahl, Matilda
b. “Dreams is full of mystery and magic . . . . Do not try to understand them.”
― Roald Dahl, The BFG

c. “I will not pretend I wasn’t petrified. I was. But mixed in with the awful fear was a glorious feeling of excitement. Most of the really exciting things we do in our lives scare us to death. They wouldn’t be exciting if they didn’t.”
― Roald Dahl, Danny the Champion of the World

d. “So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone.” -Roald Dahl,Matilda
e. “I was glad my father was an eye-smiler. It meant he never gave me a fake smile because it’s impossible to make your eyes twinkle if you aren’t feeling twinkly yourself. A mouth-smile is different. You can fake a mouth-smile any time you want, simply by moving your lips. I’ve also learned that a real mouth-smile always has an eye-smile to go with it. So watch out, I say, when someone smiles at you but his eyes stay the same. It’s sure to be a phony.”
― Roald Dahl, Danny the Champion of the World
f. And from just Roald Dahl on the value of reading and books : “Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.”
― Roald Dahl
